What to wear to Wear To rock your session
I’m so excited for our shoot, and I’m sure you are too! But you’re probably already thinking, “ok, but what do we wear?”
I got you.
Here’s the deal. I want you to look back on these photos and really FEEL the moments. Your outfit choices play a HUGE role in making that happen successfully. I want all the focus to be on YOU and while some outfits are awesome in real life, in photos they can be distracting from the main point, YOU!
So, I have a few guidelines to help you out but I want you to keep in mind that everything I’m about to tell you is just that, a guideline not a rule book. The main point is that you feel comfortable and 100% yourselves. I want these photos to represent you as best as possible.
Comfort
Comfort is everything in order to get those candid, authentic, and REAL shots. Wanna show up in an old band t-shirt and ripped jeans? HECK YES, do it. If you wanna dress a little fancier, go for it! Just make sure it’s something that you’re comfortable moving around in. You don’t want to spend the session squirming because you’re uncomfortable.
Logistics
Wherever your session is happening, make sure your wardrobe choices make logistical sense with the location. For example, high heels on a mountain top might look a little silly, not to mention dangerous. If it's cold, think about wearing multiple layers with fun, warm accessories. If it’s hot, make sure to wear clothing that breathes easily. If we are shooting in your home, think of wearing something that actually makes sense to wear in your home. Again, these guidelines are to help you feel the most comfortable as possible.
Movement
Clothing that shows movement or allows movement to happen is always my favourite because it infuses energy into the image. Anything that is long and flowy will almost always look better than something short and stiff. For guys, something slightly oversized typically looks the best, vs polos that are a bit more stiff.
Colours
When choosing what colors to wear, I highly recommend avoiding neons and super bright, fluorescent colors. When a color is bold, loud and bright, it distracts the viewer from the main point - YOU! Neutrals, earth tones and metallics all look AMAZING. Tones that are more earthy match the landscape a bit more instead of standing out like a sore thumb. However, when I say neutrals are best, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear any colour. Every color has a neutral option. Orange? Think burnt orange. Green? Forest green. Yellow? Mustard. Blue? Navy. That being said, you can never go wrong with whites, blacks, beige, brown, cream, etc.
patterns
Patterns can be great in photos but have the opportunity to get crazy real quick. Don't be afraid of wearing them, but make sure they are very simple, delicate, and soft patterns. Big, loud, bold, chunky patterns can be SUPER distracting to the eye. When viewing photos, you don't want the viewer's eye to be immediately drawn to what you’re wearing instead of YOU. Plaids and flannels are wonderful, and small subtle patterns photograph well too. If you’re questioning something, just shoot me a text and I can help you decide on your outfits.
logos and writing
As a general rule of thumb, clothing with writing and logos on it tends to be distracting, just like crazy patterns. However, if the logo or phrase is tasteful and not tacky, in theme with the shoot, and fits your personality, then I’m a fan of breaking this rule. Again, if you’re questioning it, shoot me a text and we can look at if it makes sense together.
Props
Ok I’m not talking about those cheesy christmas cards with the fake plastic candy canes kind of props. Props don’t have to be cheesy! Props are anything that help you connect, that represents YOU. They can also help give us things to actively do during our session. Props can be your pets, coffee, blankets, food, etc. They aren’t necessary by any means, but can add a personal touch.
Hair and Makeup
Some of my clients get their hair and makeup done professionally for their session, but that's totally up to you! Don’t feel like you have to, but it's also a nice excuse to treat yourself, am I right? If having your hair and makeup done will make you feel like a rockstar, then I’d highly encourage it. However, if you rarely wear make up on the daily and feel more YOU doing your own or going bare faced, then do that! Again, do whatever will make you feel the most comfortable!
